An ACL tear refers to a tear or rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which is one of the major ligaments in the knee. The ACL helps stabilize the knee by controlling forward movement and rotation of the shinbone (tibia) relative to the thighbone (femur). ACL tears often occur during activities that involve sudden stops, changes in direction, or jumping, like in sports such as soccer, basketball, or skiing.

Symptoms of an ACL tear can include a popping sound at the time of injury, swelling, pain, instability, and difficulty bearing weight on the affected leg. Treatment often depends on the severity of the tear and can range from rest and physical therapy to surgery, especially if the individual is active or participates in sports.
