Anal Fistula

An anal fistula is a small tunnel or passage that forms between the skin near the anus and the inside of the anal canal. It often develops after an infection in an anal gland causes an abscess (a painful, pus-filled swelling). Once the abscess drains, a fistula can form. This condition can cause discomfort, pain, swelling, and sometimes leakage of pus or stool. It usually requires medical treatment, and surgery is often needed to repair the fistula.
