An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus, most commonly in one of the fallopian tubes. Normally, a fertilized egg implants and grows inside the uterus, but in an ectopic pregnancy, the egg implants in an abnormal location, such as the fallopian tube, ovary, or cervix. This condition can be dangerous because the growing embryo can cause the affected organ to rupture, leading to severe internal bleeding and potentially life-threatening complications. Ectopic pregnancies usually require medical intervention, such as medication or surgery, to prevent serious harm to the mother. Symptoms often include abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, and dizziness or fainting.
