Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a medical condition where tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus (called the endometrium) grows outside of the uterus. This tissue can grow on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the outer surface of the uterus, and other organs in the pelvic area.

The main symptoms include:

  • Pain: Often intense, particularly during menstruation, but it can also occur during other times, such as during intercourse or bowel movements.
  • Heavy periods: Many women with endometriosis experience very heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding.
  • Infertility: It can cause difficulty getting pregnant for some women.
  • Other symptoms: Fatigue, gastrointestinal issues, and bloating are common as well.

The exact cause of endometriosis is unknown, but factors like genetics, immune system issues, and menstrual flow problems are thought to contribute to its development. Treatment options often include medications (pain relievers, hormonal treatments) and in some cases, surgery to remove endometrial tissue.
