Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. The prostate is a small gland that sits just below the bladder in men and helps produce semen. As men age, the prostate can grow larger, which may lead to symptoms like difficulty urinating, frequent urination, especially at night, a weak urine stream, or a feeling that the bladder isn’t fully empty.
BPH is common in older men, and while it isn’t cancerous, it can still affect quality of life. The exact cause is unclear, but hormonal changes related to aging are thought to play a role. Treatments can include lifestyle changes, medications, or surgery, depending on the severity of symptoms.
