Meniscus Tear

A meniscus tear is a common knee injury where the meniscus, a C-shaped cartilage structure in the knee, gets torn. The meniscus helps cushion and stabilize the knee joint. Tears can occur during activities that involve twisting, turning, or sudden stops, such as sports like football, basketball, or skiing.

Symptoms:

  • Pain, especially when twisting or rotating the knee
  • Swelling and stiffness
  • Limited range of motion
  • A feeling of the knee “giving way” or locking

Treatment:

  • Conservative methods: Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (R.I.C.E.), physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications.
  • Surgical options: In cases of severe tears or if conservative treatments don’t work, surgery (arthroscopy) may be needed to either repair or remove the torn meniscus.

Recovery can vary depending on the severity of the tear, the treatment method, and the person’s overall health. If you suspect a meniscus tear, it’s a good idea to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
