Thyroidectomy

A thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure in which all or part of the thyroid gland is removed. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck that produces hormones regulating metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature.

There are two main types of thyroidectomy:

  1. Total thyroidectomy: Removal of the entire thyroid gland.
  2. Partial (or subtotal) thyroidectomy: Removal of only a portion of the thyroid gland.

Thyroidectomy is typically performed to treat thyroid conditions such as:

  • Thyroid cancer
  • Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
  • Goiter (enlarged thyroid)
  • Thyroid nodules that are large or cause symptoms.

The procedure is usually done under general anesthesia, and recovery depends on the extent of the surgery and individual health factors. After a thyroidectomy, patients may need hormone replacement therapy if the entire thyroid is removed, as the body can no longer produce thyroid hormones naturally.
