Vaginoplasty

A vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure typically performed to reconstruct or create a vaginal canal. It can be done for several reasons, including:

  1. Gender-affirming surgery: For transgender women (male-to-female individuals), vaginoplasty is part of gender-affirming surgery, where a neo-vagina is created as part of their transition.
  2. Congenital conditions: In some cases, individuals may be born with conditions that affect the development of the vagina, and vaginoplasty can be used to correct these issues.
  3. Reconstructive surgery: Vaginoplasty may also be performed for reconstructive purposes after injury, disease, or other medical reasons that affect vaginal function or structure.

The procedure can involve using tissue from other parts of the body to form the vaginal lining, and may include other procedures such as labiaplasty (reconstruction of the labia) or clitoroplasty (reconstruction of the clitoris), depending on the patient’s needs and the type of surgery being performed.
